Taiwan NCC issues WiMAX operation regulations

Taiwan's National Communications Commission (NCC) on March 30 announced WiMAX operation regulations, with the rules coming into force immediately.

According to the regulations, existing operators of fixed-line and/or mobile telecommunication services can apply for WiMAX operating licenses, however , if they are granted a license, they will be required to keep WiMAX operation accounting and networks independent of those for their existing operations. In addition, such hybrid operators shall not unduly bundle sales of WiMAX services and charge rates with those of their existing fixed-line and/or mobile communication services in attempts to maximize market occupation, lower prices, or preclude competition by others.

The regulation also specifies a four-year schedule under which WiMAX licensees are to have certain proportions of their base stations in common structures or at common locations.
