US chip-maker Intel has said it plans to introduce its next-generation Centrino 2 mobile platform, code-named Montevina, on the 14th of July. The new platform should offer faster performance and longer battery life, and has been much anticipated by the global WiMax community as it incorporates both WiFi and WiMax connectivity. According to Intel the chips will be 40% smaller than current ones which should enable them to fit better into notebooks and other small devices.
Intel, which recently poured US$1 billion into the new Clearwire WiMax business, has already shown it is prepared to put its money where its mouth is. The company clearly hopes that having WiMax incorporated in the new platform will help boost the standard in the same way that offering chips with WiFi did. However, Clearwire, which is backed by Sprint, Google and a handful of US cable companies, plans to roll out its network on a market-by-market basis. By 2011 Clearwire will have a presence in the main 200 US cities.
