Paris and Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic - October 25, 2007 – ONEMAX, a new and innovative broadband wireless access provider serving the Dominican Republic, and Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced the completion of the world’s first mobile handoffs on a commercial WiMAX 802.16e-2005 (Rev-e) network in 3.5 gigahertz spectrum band. Subscribers on ONEMAX’s network in the city of Santo Domingo enjoyed the groundbreaking mobile broadband services at an event marking the inauguration of ONEMAX’s commercial network, officially opened yesterday.
Participants in the event -– ONEMAX’s executives and customers, local celebrities, government dignitaries, including Dr. Margarita Cedeño de Fernández, the First Lady of the Dominican Republic, and other officials, reporters and analysts -- were treated to video telephony, high-definition streaming video, mobile broadband Internet access and voice over IP (VoIP) services. The services were delivered over the ONEMAX network to users traveling in a van. The services were supported with an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) core maintained by Alcatel-Lucent. The new service offerings highlight how the all-IP WiMAX radio access network can be coupled with an IMS architecture to enable the use of service delivery platforms located virtually anywhere in the world.
“This achievement highlights the readiness of our network today, to offer a whole new range of compelling broadband services to residents of the Dominican Republic as well as visitors,” said Raoul Fontanez, ONEMAX CEO. “This collaboration with Alcatel-Lucent also is enabling us to give our customers and other distinguished guests a taste of some of the more advanced multimedia services that we will be able to introduce in the future.”
“Our collaboration with ONEMAX has offered an ideal showcase for the latest capabilities that WiMAX has to offer,” said Olivier Picard, President of Alcatel-Lucent’s activities in the Europe and South region. “These achievements show that WiMAX is here today and poised to play an increasingly critical role in the delivery of mobile broadband services worldwide.”
ONEMAX is the first service provider in the Dominican Republic to offer full nationwide wireless high-speed broadband Internet, multimedia and Voice over IP(VoIP) services. The network is based on Alcatel-Lucent’s advanced WiMAX Rev-e solution, which provides truly “universal” wireless broadband access in fixed, nomadic and mobile environments.
The handoffs were conducted using terminal devices from ZyXel, a participant in Alcatel-Lucent’s Open CPE (customer premises equipment) Program, which is designed to promote an open device ecosystem and ensure customers have the widest possible range of interoperable end-user devices.
With more than 70 pilots and deployments across the world and 15 commercial contracts signed since the beginning of 2007, Alcatel-Lucent is No. 1 in the worldwide WiMAX market.

* “Beam forming” is an Advanced Antenna Technology (AAT) that ensures that radio power is concentrated where the WiMAX terminals are, adjusting the beam automatically as the terminals move around the coverage area.
** “MIMO” (Multiple Input – Multiple Output) is an Advanced Antenna Technology (AAT) that combines the radio signals transmitted and received on separate antennas. The technique takes advantage of the multiple paths and reflections of a radio signal to strengthen radio communications, particularly in densely populated areas where signals can be degraded by buildings and other physical obstacles.
