ApaceWave Technology, a Silicon Valley-based broadband wireless solution provider, is expected to try sample production of WiMAX chips supporting the 802.16e Wave 2 standard in the first quarter of 2008, according to company sources.
Although other chipmakers, including Beceem, Sequans and Runcom, have already rolled out WiMAX chips supporting the 802.16e Wave 1 standard, ApaceWave has decided to bypass the Wave 1 standard to directly enter manufacturing Wave 2 chips, the sources stated.
The company's upcoming 802.16e Wave 2-compliant chip, the APW-2000, is a single chip solution that integrates the PHY, media access controller (MAC), embedded CPU and multiple interfaces in one solution, noted the sources, adding that the chip also supports FPGA (field programmable gate array) and MIMO (multi-in multi-out) technologies.
Initially, the company will tape out the chip on a 90nm manufacturing process at a leading wafer foundry, said the sources.
Although there are other chipmakers who look down on the prospects for WiMAX technology, ApaceWave expects the WiMAX market to pick up momentum from August or September of 2008 since the development of WiMAX networks in the US, Europe and Asia has yet to slow down, the source asserted.
