(JCN Press Releases Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Tokyo and Taipei, Oct 18, 2007 - (JCN Newswire) - NEC Corporation announced that Tatung Company, a major Taiwanese conglomerate that focuses on ISP business and the manufacturing/sale of consumer electronics and LCDs, is to hold WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) demonstrations at the Taiwan WiMAX Forum from October 22-23 using NEC's WiMAX system.
The WiMAX demonstration is part of the M-Taiwan Project[1] being undertaken by the Taiwanese government to promote the construction of an advanced information society and encourage the growth of domestic industry.
The demonstration leverages the know-how cultivated through the WiMAX-based government medical service trials[2] currently being carried out jointly by Tatung and NEC in Hualian City. At the Taiwan WiMAX Forum, the demonstration will be centered on the transportation of a patient by ambulance to the hospital. The WiMAX system enables medical information, such as the patient's heart rate and blood pressure, to be sent to the hospital on route via a WiMAX network. Similarly, the hospital can send the patient's past medical records to the ambulance to enable appropriate emergency treatment to be carried out on route. Audio and video information is already being handled by existing wireless infrastructures, however, these systems cannot handle larger capacity transmissions, which are required to send large-volume data such as X-rays. Handover among base stations is also required to send and receive large-volume data at high speeds to and from a moving vehicle.
NEC has overcome these technical challenges by leveraging its know-how in wireless broadband communications and WiMAX technologies, as well as by optimizing the installation of base stations.
Tatung plays a central role in M-Taiwan and has acquired a business license to participate in the WiMAX communication carrier business based on the results of the Hualien trials, for which NEC is providing comprehensive support. In May, NEC signed a basic agreement with the Taiwan Ministry of Economic Affairs to construct a WiMAX R&D Center[3] in Taiwan, and is currently involved in preparations to establish the center.
NEC will continue to strengthen collaboration with Tatung to promote further development of the Taiwanese WiMAX industry, and will build on this and past successes to grow its global WiMAX business.
[1] M-Taiwan Project -
M-Taiwan is a national project to establish a networked information society and to cultivate IT-related industries in the domestic market. Taiwan aims to upgrade its IT infrastructure based on wireless broadband application technology and cultivate domestic industries related to WiMAX - two major objectives of the M-Taiwan project.
[2] Hualian City Trials -
NEC worked in collaboration with Tatung to implement WiMAX system trials in Hualien city since it received an order for a trial WiMAX system at the start of this year. Hualien city plans to utilize the WiMAX system for tourism and medical services in the future. In the trials, NEC demonstrated internet access and video streaming service that achieved 6 Mbps transmission per user. The system's high performance was also verified by the realization of smooth handover among base stations, and stable in-vehicle access during operation.
[3] NEC's WiMAX R&D Center -
The "Multimedia E2E R&D Center" will be established as part of the "M-Taiwan" project being lead by the Taiwanese Government. End-to-end live wireless development environments, using NEC's WiMAX base stations and application service platforms, will be provided at the new centre. NEC will open the centre to local equipment vendors to enable the implementation of inter-operability tests, supporting service providers and software vendors in the development and verification of application services. Demonstration results will be fed back to enable further development by NEC. The centre will be established in Taipei within 2007.
