Two Taiwan WiMAX licensees set initial schedules for infrastructure construction

Kaddy Chung, Taipei

First International Telecom (Fitel) and WiMAX Telecom, two WiMAX licensees for the northern region of Taiwan, have initially scheduled their establishment of WiMAX infrastructure, both giving Taipei City first priority, according to the two companies.

Fitel plans to select a single equipment supplier in early December 2007 to carry out WiMAX-related projects subsidized under the government's Mobile Taiwan Program (M-Taiwan) and expects to procure equipment for further WiMAX services from the same supplier, the company indicated.

Fitel plans to set up 52 base stations first in Taipei City and 380 base stations in the area of Hsinchu in 2008 and then additional base stations in other areas of northern Taiwan in 2009-2010, part of the cost to be covered by an M-Taiwan subsidy, the company pointed out. Fitel plans to kick off WiMAX operations first in Taipei and Hsinchu.

WiMAX Telecom is not participating in Taiwan's M-Taiwan project but Vibo Telecom, a shareholder of WiMAX Telecom, receives a subsidy from it. WiMAX Telecom plans to utilize a portion of Vibo's WiMAX infrastructure to minimize investment, the company indicated. In addition, WiMAX Telecom may select an equipment supplier from Vibo's M-Taiwan project if the equipment performs well, the company pointed out.

WiMAX Telecom plans to establish 180 base stations in Taipei City by mid-2008 and then add base stations in other areas to reach a total number of 1,100-1,200 in mid-2009, according to the company.
